The evoked potentials (VP) method is used to study the function of the sensory systems of the brain (somatosensory, visual, auditory) and brain systems responsible for cognitive processes. The method is based on the registration of bioelectric reactions of the brain in response to external stimulation (in the case of sensory VP) and when performing a cognitive task (in the case of cognitive VP).
For diagnostic purposes, short-latency auditory, somatosensory, visual and motor VP have been most widely used. For example, stem AVPs (Brainstem auditory evoked potentials) are used as a standard neurophysiological test for the study of brain stem lesions and an objective assessment of hearing impairment.
Somatosensory and motor VP make it possible to identify and assess the degree of dysfunction of the spinal cord pathways. Visual VP is important in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
